Emerging Young Artists – FAQs

Why do I need to give your my drivers' license number?

The City of Norwich requires that we collect your drivers’ license number and date of birth. Sorry, there’s no getting around it. Colorscape covers the $5 vendor fee that the city charges.

Do I need to bring my own lunch?

We provide lunches, delivered to your booth if you like, or you can visit the Hospitality Booth.

Vegetarian lunches are available upon request. We cannot accomodate other special diets.

Why do you need to know how many pieces of artwork I will bring?

Please try to estimate the number of pieces you will bring. We won’t be checking – this allows us to plan for the space and the display equipment you will need.

Who is eligible?

High school students who live and/or attend school (including home school, parochial, private and public schools) IN CHENANGO OR ADJOINING COUNTIES.

How do I get a NYS Sales Tax Certificate?

You don’t need one. Colorscape will provide a Sales Tax Certificate and receipts for you. You should add 8% sales tax to the amount of any purchase when you sell a piece, excluding clothing up to $110. Keep track of your sales, including the tax. At the end of the festival, return one copy of the receipts to Colorscape’s treasurer – keeping one for yourself – and turn over the amount of the sales tax you collected. You keep all the money from sales for yourself.

How long should the essay be?

About 500 words would be good for the biographical essay. Be sure to include your plans for the future.

What happens when I am accepted?

Once you are accepted by the jury, a letter and contract will be mailed to you. Please return the signed contract to Colorscape by July 15th. If you are under 18, it will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.

What happens at the festival?

You will set up your booth on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, sharing it with another student. When the festival opens, you will sell your work to Colorscape’s visitors the same as our professional artists. Feel free to invite your family and friends, and have fun!

How do I get my work ready for the show?

Artwork sells more readily if it is ready to hang or display. People don’t want to buy a painting, then have to pay to have it framed. We can provide assistance with pricing and labeling your work, and give you advice about framing.

Can I leave the booth?

You are allowed to take breaks, of course, but you must be present during the entire festival. No exceptions. Experiencing the festival is half the fun, and you can’t gain any experience if you aren’t there! It is also very important to the integrity of the festival to have artists present in person. This point is non-negotiable. With several of you in the booth there should be plenty of time to check out the rest of the artists. You can also have others watch your work.

What is an Artist Information Statement?

We will provide guidelines for writing your own Artist Information Statement when you are accepted. The purpose is to inform the public about the media and processes you use to create your work. No secrets need be disclosed.

More questions? We will be happy to answer any questions you have about preparing your images and can even assist in the process if necessary.
